The doctor and the nonprofit
About Us
Introducing Dr. Denette Cooke
Dr. Denette O. Cooke opened her hospital in Chesapeake, VA, in 2002 and has been practicing integrative veterinary medicine since 2005. With a background in chemistry, she holds certifications in chiropractic, acupuncture, and Balance Method acupuncture, and is highly skilled in the use of Chinese herbal medicine. She is one of only 120 veterinarians worldwide certified in the advanced Balance Method, reflecting her dedication to blending Eastern and Western modalities for optimal healing—a philosophy she calls the “Two Black Bag” approach to medicine.
Dr. Cooke has a particular passion for managing complex cases and caring for senior pets. She is equally devoted to teaching and mentoring the next generation of veterinarians. To further this mission, she founded drcookevet.com, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to veterinary education, scholarships, and charitable veterinary causes. She actively invites the local veterinary community to join in building this nonprofit, with the goal of funding and inspiring students across all veterinary disciplines to continue their education in the healing arts.

The Purpose of Our Nonprofit
drcookevet.com exists to support and sustain the next generation of veterinary healers through scholarships, mentorships, and career guidance. We focus on integrative medicine, advanced skills, communication, business acumen, and the well-being of the healer—preserving the deep, experience-based knowledge of seasoned practitioners while embracing modern innovations. Our mission is to return veterinary medicine to its roots: compassionate, high-quality patient care that prioritizes healing over profit, empowering veterinarians and staff to thrive in careers aligned with their values and calling.
The Symbolism and Significance of the Dragonfly
Our dragonfly logo symbolizes transformation, resilience, and the wisdom of change—qualities at the heart of healing. Across cultures, the dragonfly represents courage, spiritual growth, and the ability to move with grace through life’s challenges. Its independent wings, capable of flying in any direction, mirror the adaptability required in the healing professions. Encircled by the Five Element colors of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the dragonfly’s lavender heart connects mind and spirit, reminding us that true healing unites head and heart. It calls us to stay present, embrace change, and nurture our own well-being while caring for others.
