Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)

A Modern Qi and Blood Tonic

When most people think of Vitamin B12, they think of an “energy vitamin.” While it certainly plays an important role in energy metabolism, Vitamin B12 is much more than that. It has become one of my favorite tools in integrative veterinary medicine because of its ability to support the nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, red blood cell production, and the body’s natural healing processes.

Although Vitamin B12 is not a botanical herb, I still think of it as this month’s Herb of the Month. In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), the Materia Medica extends far beyond plants alone. Throughout history, medicinal substances have included plants, minerals, and animal-derived products—all selected for their healing properties. In that spirit, Vitamin B12 has earned a place in my modern integrative “medicine bag.”

From a TCVM perspective, Vitamin B12 functions much like a Qi tonic and Blood tonic. Qi is the body’s vital energy that powers every physiologic function, while Blood nourishes the tissues, muscles, tendons, nerves, and mind. When Qi and Blood become deficient, pets may develop weakness, fatigue, poor appetite, weight loss, neurologic disease, delayed healing, anemia, or chronic digestive disorders.

Vitamin B12 beautifully supports many of these patients.

From a Western medical perspective, Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy nerve function, DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and normal gastrointestinal health. Deficiency can contribute to anemia, poor appetite, weight loss, gastrointestinal disease, weakness, and neurologic dysfunction.

At The Cooke Veterinary Medical Center – The Place for Healing®, Vitamin B12 is frequently incorporated into our integrative treatment plans. We often administer it through Aqua Acupuncture, where small amounts are injected into selected acupuncture points. This technique provides prolonged stimulation of the acupuncture point while delivering a nutrient that supports neurologic function and tissue repair.

One of my favorite recent cases involved a 17-year-old cat suffering from severe anemia, profound weakness, and declining quality of life. As part of a comprehensive integrative treatment plan—including nutritional support, individualized care, and Vitamin B12—the cat gradually regained strength, appetite, and quality of life. It was another reminder that age alone does not determine a patient’s ability to heal when we provide the body with the tools it needs.

No single therapy is a miracle cure, and Vitamin B12 is not the answer for every patient. However, when thoughtfully incorporated into an individualized treatment plan, it can be one of the safest, most versatile, and most rewarding therapies we have.

One of the things I love most about integrative medicine is that it allows us to combine the wisdom of ancient healing traditions with the discoveries of modern science. Vitamin B12 represents that philosophy beautifully. Whether viewed through the lens of Western medicine or TCVM, it supports the body’s remarkable ability to restore balance and heal.

Sometimes the simplest therapies make the biggest difference.
